About The Winery

Vieux Château Certan is located in the Pomerol appellation on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, on the plateau near estates such as Petrus, Lafleur and Certan de May. The estate is one of the oldest in Pomerol, with origins dating back to the early 16th century, when the Demay family from Scotland settled in the area and established the property. Over the centuries the estate changed hands several times before being acquired in 1924 by Georges Thienpont, a wine merchant from the Flemish Ardennes. The château has remained in the Thienpont family ever since. Today the estate is managed by Alexandre Thienpont together with his son Guillaume, continuing the family tradition.

Vinification

Fermentation at Vieux Château Certan takes place in 21 temperature-controlled vats, including 8 large oak vats and 13 stainless-steel tanks. The oak vats were installed in 1972 and are still used today. The vats vary in size from 40 to 125 hectoliters, allowing the estate to vinify grapes from different parcels separately and to adapt the fermentation vessels to each variety and vine age.

On the nose, Vieux Château Certan 2017 reveals rich aromas of plum, black cherry, and blackberry layered with notes of violet, truffle, cedar, and subtle spice from careful oak aging. The palate is smooth and full‑bodied, offering flavors of concentrated dark fruit, soft earthiness, and mineral undertones supported by polished tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long and lingering, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and gentle oak complexity.
