About The Winery

Founded in 1989 in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Poggio di Sotto quickly distinguished itself by embracing a traditional, terroir-first philosophy at a time when many estates were pursuing richer, more modern styles. The vineyards lie on steep slopes overlooking the Orcia River, an area prized for its dramatic day–night temperature shifts and complex soils of clay, stone, and limestone.

The estate is legendary for its extremely low yields, meticulous grape selection, and long, gentle macerations. Fermentations take place with native yeasts, and ageing occurs exclusively in large Slavonian oak casks—botti—often for more than three years. This time-honoured approach allows Sangiovese to express its most transparent and soulful character.

Poggio di Sotto’s wines have achieved cult status among collectors and critics alike, consistently ranking among the most admired Brunelli for their elegance, vibrancy, and longevity.
