About The Winery

Poggio Antico is a historic estate located in Montalcino, Tuscany, and is widely regarded as one of the region’s benchmark producers of Brunello di Montalcino. The estate is defined by its exceptional vineyard position, long-term vision, and a consistent focus on elegance, balance, and longevity.

The estate was founded in 1984 by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder, who were among the pioneers of modern Brunello, investing early in high-altitude vineyards when this approach was still uncommon. From the very beginning, Poggio Antico was conceived as a quality-driven project, with all vineyards planted specifically for Brunello production.

Today, the estate is owned by the Belgian entrepreneur Graeme Mackenzie, who has continued to invest significantly in both vineyards and cellar facilities, while preserving the original philosophy of the domaine.

Poggio Antico owns around 35 hectares of vineyards, all situated in a single, continuous estate on the southwestern side of Montalcino. The vineyards lie at elevations between 450 and 500 meters above sea level, making them among the highest in the appellation

Vinification

In the cellar, Poggio Antico combines traditional Brunello methods with modern precision. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing for clean expression of fruit and terroir. Maceration times are adapted to the vintage to achieve structure without excess extraction.

Aging is carried out primarily in large oak casks, in line with Brunello tradition, with extended bottle ageing before release. 

On the nose, this Brunello reveals inviting aromas of ripe cherry, plum, and blackberry, layered with notes of dried herbs, earth, tobacco leaf, and subtle spice from careful aging. The palate is full-bodied yet gracefully textured, offering flavors of dark fruit, leather, and gentle oak influence supported by firm, polished tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and savory complexity.
