About The Winery

Château Cos d’Estournel was founded in 1811 by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, who quickly established the estate as one of Bordeaux’s most internationally focused properties, exporting its wines directly to clients across Europe and as far as India. This early trade connection inspired the château’s distinctive East-Indian architectural style, which remains a defining feature today.

Initially, Cos d’Estournel operated outside the Bordeaux négociant system, bottling and selling its wines independently - an uncommon practice at the time. However, in order to be included in the 1855 Classification, the estate later adopted the Place de Bordeaux distribution model. This strategic shift proved decisive, securing Cos d’Estournel its status as a Deuxième Cru Classé and anchoring its place among Bordeaux’s great classified growths.

Over time Cos d’Estournel has passed through several owners and today forms a flagship property in the portfolio of Michel Reybier, who acquired the château in 2000.The estate’s rolling contours served as inspiration for its name; ”cos” is derived from the word for “hill of pebbles” in the old Gascon dialect.

The vineyards of Château Cos d’Estournel are planted on a diverse range of gravel terraces deposited by the Gironde estuary, with older, coarser gravel near the riverside and finer gravel further inland. Within the estate there are distinct parcels on gravel, clay and sandy soils, each contributing different structural and aromatic components to the wines. This diversity of terroir allows the blending of parcels with varying soil compositions, enhancing complexity, balance and expression in the grand vin.

On the nose, Pagodes de Cos reveals inviting aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and subtle spice from oak aging. The palate is smooth and well-balanced, offering flavors of dark fruits, gentle earthy undertones, and refined tannins supported by fresh acidity.
