Opus One Napa Valley 2016 is an iconic California red wine born from the collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Produced at the Opus One estate in Oakville, Napa Valley, the wine combines French winemaking tradition with the distinctive character of Napa Valley. The 2016 blend consists of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec.

The 2016 vintage is remarkably elegant and bright, opening with sumptuous aromas of fresh red and blue fruit, baking spices, vanilla and delicate spring florals. More nuanced notes of sage, rosemary and black olive add savoury complexity. On the palate, juicy black cherry, blackberry and cassis are framed by creamy, fine-grained tannins that provide a beautifully rounded structure. The finish is long and harmonious, revealing lingering touches of dark chocolate and espresso.

The 2016 growing season benefited from favourable conditions at the Oakville estate, despite being the fifth consecutive year of drought in Northern California. Harvest began on September 9 under mild conditions and was completed on October 12. The wine underwent 17 days of skin contact before spending 18 months in new French oak, contributing to its polished texture, depth and integrated spice character.

Serve at around 16 to 18°C to allow its layered fruit, floral notes, herbs and subtle oak character to fully emerge. Gentle decanting is recommended, particularly when opening a young bottle, to encourage the wine to open and reveal its complexity. With its concentration, structure and balance, the 2016 vintage also has considerable potential for further development in the cellar.
