About The Winery

Ornellaia is an iconic Italian wine estate located near Bolgheri in Tuscany, acclaimed for its Bordeaux-style “Super Tuscan” wines and consistent pursuit of excellence. Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori with the first vineyards planted in 1982 and the winery beginning operations in 1985, Ornellaia quickly established itself among Italy’s top wine producers with its flagship Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC. Ornellaia was created by Lodovico Antinori of the historic Antinori wine family, with a vision to produce a Bordeaux-inspired wine on the unique soils of Bolgheri. The first Ornellaia vintage appeared in 1985, and the estate has remained an influential name in Italian wine ever since. Ownership later passed through the Robert Mondavi partnership, and in 2005 the Frescobaldi family acquired full ownership, firmly embedding Ornellaia within another of Italy’s great wine families and ensuring continuity of investment and development.

The soil at Ornellaia is marine, alluvial and volcanic in origin. The vineyards are separated into dozens of parcels: each is a microcosm with its own unique identity and expression.

Vinification

Vinification at Ornellaia varies by cuvée. For the flagship Bolgheri Superiore, parcel-specific fermentations are followed by extended aging in oak.
