Kilchoman - Sanaig

  • Back to the Roots

Kilchoman (pron. Kil-Ho-Man), is one of the smalest distilleries of Scotland with an annual output of 120.000 liters. It was started in 2005 by Anthony Wills, who ran an independent single cask bottling company for 8 years, and was immersed in building the ultimate farm distillery, where he’d take Whisky back to its roots.

The Kilcoman distillery is one of only six Scotch distilleries to carry out traditional floor maltings, and one of only two to do the malting, distilling, maturing and bottling on site. They grow their own Barley on the farm itself, whereas most other distilleries purchase it around the country (or even abroad).

If you like small batch and artisanal Spirits, when it comes to Single Malts this is as good as it gets.

Sanaig is the name of a little natural stream that runs by the distillery. And that make sense because Kilchoman Sanaig is light and fresh without losing its peaty Islay character.

It is aged 50% in ex-Bourbon casks and 50% in Oloroso Sherry casks, imparting a balance of dried fruits, dark chocolate and rich peat smoke into the spirit.

Pineapple chunks and white grapes. Hints of fresh coffee carry the earthy, subtly spicy peat. Toffee cubes.

  • Palate

More light fruits (this time of the peach variety), with dark chocolate raisins and a whisper of red berries. Peat grows and grows, with a little black pepper too.

  • Finish

Quite long with coastal peat lasting.

Pineapple, white grapes, and fresh coffee entice my senses as you savour Kilchoman Sanaig. Its earthy, subtly spicy peat and toffee cubes added depth to the palate. Dark chocolate raisins and a hint of red berries further delighted my taste in this appetising whisky.

That's quite something! Get sippin' and keep the good vibes flowin'!

Zakir Gibbons

An incredible blend of fruity sweetness and dark chocolate richness.
