About The Winery

Champagne Eric Rodez is a family-owned grower Champagne based in Ambonnay, one of the historic Grand Cru villages of the Montagne de Reims. The estate has been rooted in Ambonnay for several generations and today is led by Éric Rodez, 8 generation, who is responsible for viticulture, winemaking and ageing decisions. Eric has an outstanding know-how, and has worked as an oenologist at Krug

The domaine farms approximately 6 hectares of vineyards, all classified as Grand Cru and located primarily in Ambonnay, with a strong dominance of Pinot Noir, complemented by Chardonnay. The soils are typical of the Montagne de Reims: chalk with significant clay content, contributing to wines of structure, depth and pronounced vinosity. Vine age is an important factor at the estate, with many parcels planted several decades ago, favouring low yields and concentration.

Rodez has also gained extensive experience in other French wine regions, notably in Alsace, where he developed a strong understanding of organic and environmentally responsible vineyard practices. He doesn`t use the word organic, because they are not certified. But as a grower, Eric never uses pesticides, fertilizers or synthetic sprays on his plants. The family plow their soils and limit their yields through careful pruning. They have worked biodynamically for several years now, and in 2012 received the Haute Valeur Environnmentale (HVE) certificate given to farmers who achieve organic farming but also biodiversity and water management on their farms. ​Harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, based on phenolic maturity rather than fixed picking dates.

Vinification

All base wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation is generally allowed, depending on the profile of the vintage and the parcel, in order to achieve balance between acidity and texture. A distinctive element of the house style is the use of oak: about 70% of Rodez Champagne is fermented and aged in oak. The aim is not aromatic wood expression, but oxygen exchange and textural development.
