About The Winery

Domaine Henri Gouges is a historic family-owned estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Côte de Nuits, and is widely regarded as one of the reference producers of the appellation. The domaine was formally established in the years following the First World War by Henri Gouges, who played a decisive role not only in shaping the estate but also in influencing the wider structure of Burgundian winegrowing. He was among the early advocates of bottling wine at the domaine rather than selling it to négociants, and he was directly involved in the creation and legal definition of the French AOC system in the 1930s.

The estate today covers approximately 14.5 hectares, almost entirely located within the commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Its vineyard holdings are notable for their concentration in high-quality climats, particularly at Premier Cru level. Among the most important sites are Les Saint-Georges, Les Vaucrains, Les Chaignots and Les Pruliers, as well as Clos des Porrets–Saint-Georges, a monopole of the domaine and one of the historic vineyards of the appellation. The soils are predominantly limestone and marl, contributing to wines that consistently show structure, firmness and longevity rather than early accessibility.

Since 2008, the domaine has been treated exclusively organically, and since 2007, a new modern cuverie has been in use.  

Vinification

Production at Domaine Henri Gouges is focused primarily on red wines from Pinot Noir. 

The winemaking is traditional for top Burgundy classics: there is severe sorting before complete destemming of the bunches.

Fermentation takes place with only natural yeasts, at a low temperature (max 29°C). Next, the wines are transferred to oak barrels, 15-20% of which are new. Oak is used judiciously, with a moderate proportion of new barrels, to support the wine without obscuring terroir expression. As a result, the wines are often tight and reserved in youth, requiring time in bottle to fully reveal their complexity, aromatic depth and textural refinement.

On the nose, this Premier Cru reveals refined aromas of red cherry, wild raspberry, and plum, layered with floral hints, gentle spice, and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is structured and beautifully balanced, offering flavors of red berries, minerality, and soft oak influence supported by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and terroir expression.
