About The Winery
Domaine Fourrier is an estate in the Gevrey-Chambertin region of Burgundy. In 1994, after completing six-month internships with Henry Jayer and Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and in Vosne-Romanée, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over the family’s 10-hectare property from his father, Jean-Claude, at the age of 23. Jean-Marie had his own views on how best to run the vineyards and expanded the range by vinifying each of the Gevrey 1er Crus separately, whereas his father used to blend them together.
He is fortunate to be working with very old vines. His most famous holdings are in Griotte-Chambertin and Clos St. Jacques, with vines planted between 1902 and 1910.
Fourrier does not fit into any specific camp of vignerons. He is not biodynamic, though his approach shares much with the more sensitive proponents of that philosophy. Fourrier describes his low-intervention approach as “the philosophy of doing nothing.”
Fermentation begins spontaneously with natural yeasts. The wine is later moved into barrels (no more than 20% new oak), where it stays for 12 months on the lees. In the same vein, there is no racking. As Fourrier explains, "We like to keep high levels of carbonic gas which allows minimal use of sulfur - the CO2 acts as a natural protectant which would need to be replaced by sulfur if racked. Also, one of the micro proteins of the dead yeast is glycerol which during the malo-lactic fermentation is suspended into the wine and fixes, giving a lovely fatness and roundness in mouth." Bottling is done without fining or filtering.
As a result, Jean-Marie makes some of Burgundy’s most gloriously expressive wines. His reds share a common thread of superb balance, captivating elegance and finesse, haunting aromatic complexity, and fine structure. Each wine also fully displays the unique character of its Cru, reflecting differences in slope, exposure, and the depth of topsoil overlying Gevrey’s ancient limestone base.
