About The Winery

Clos des Papes is one of the most historic and authoritative estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and a benchmark producer for the Southern Rhône. The domaine has been in the hands of the Avril family since the 17th century, with documented vine-growing activity dating back to 1610. Its modern reputation was firmly established in the 20th century under Paul Avril, who played a key role in defining the identity and prestige of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as a great wine region. Today, the estate is run by Paul-Vincent Avril, continuing a lineage built on consistency, restraint and deep respect for terroir.

The property has today 40 ha, 3 of which are planted to white varieties with 30 different parcels spread around the village. The red Chateauneuf is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah with about 5% being a mix of all the other permitted varieties. (They are one of the few estates to use all permitted varieties for both red and white Chateauneuf.) The domaine deliberately works with a mosaic of terroirs, including galets roulés (rolled pebbles), sandy soils and limestone-based sites. Vines are largely old, with many parcels exceeding 60 years of age. The estate’s commitment to organic viticulture, certified since 2011, reflects a philosophy of respect for the land and its long-term vitality.

Vinification

Vinification at Clos des Papes is deliberately traditional and non-interventionist. 

At Clos des Papes, the reds are always co-fermented with two varieties together. Fermentations are carried out using native yeasts. For red wines, fermentation takes place primarily in large concrete vats, allowing gentle extraction and preserving purity of fruit. Aging is conducted mainly in large-format oak foudres, with minimal use of small barrels, ensuring that oak influence remains subtle and never dominant. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and élevage is extended to allow natural clarification and integration before bottling.

On the nose, Clos des Papes reveals expressive aromas of ripe raspberry, black cherry, and plum, layered with notes of dried herbs, spice, leather, and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is rich and full-bodied, offering flavors of red and dark berries, peppery spice, and gentle herbal notes supported by smooth tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and minerality.
