About The Winery

Cheval des Andes is a flagship Argentine wine project created in Mendoza through a long-term collaboration between Château Cheval Blanc, one of the great historic estates of Bordeaux, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A in Saint-Émilion, and the Argentine winery Terrazas de los Andes. Founded in 1999, the project was conceived to combine the vision, technical expertise and philosophy of Château Cheval Blanc with the distinctive high-altitude terroirs of the Andes - 1000-1100 m a.s.l.

The vineyards are located primarily in Las Compuertas (Luján de Cuyo), at the foothills of the Andes, where altitude, strong diurnal temperature variation and alluvial soils of sand, gravel and clay provide a natural balance between ripeness, freshness and structure. The estate farms approximately 45 hectares of vineyards, carefully selected and developed for long-term quality rather than short-term production. The blend is centred on Malbec, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting a dialogue between Bordeaux structure and Argentine identity.

Vinification

Vinification is carried out on a parcel-by-parcel basis, with each variety and plot fermented separately in temperature-controlled vats. Aging takes place primarily in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak adjusted to the character of each vintage, following the cellar philosophy of Château Cheval Blanc. The final blend is assembled after extended maturation, followed by additional bottle ageing prior to release.

On the nose, Cheval des Andes reveals intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, layered with floral hints, cocoa, tobacco, and subtle spice from oak aging. The palate is rich, full-bodied, and beautifully structured, offering flavors of dark berries, chocolate, and gentle earthy undertones supported by polished tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and oak.
