“Offer charm and pleasure, in a very classic, Margaux style.”

“Inky purple in colour even at 19 years old. This is exuberant in the style of Lascombes at the time, and it is holding up well, remaining expressive and enticing. Grilled cedar and sandalwood, blueberry and blackberry fruit, oak more evident than in the 2004 which is perhaps surprising giving the quality of the 2005 vintage, and surely speaks to choices in the cellar. Malolactic in barrel, elevage on the lees for 4 months using oxoline. Less finessed charm than some 2005 Margaux, but hard to argue with the quality. 40hl/h yield, harvest September 21 to October 19, 100% new oak. Dominique Befve director, Alain Raynaud and Michel Rolland consultant winemakers.” - Jane Anson 94 (drinking window 2023-2040)

About The Winery

Château Lascombes is located in the Margaux appellation in the Médoc on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. The estate dates back to the 17th century and takes its name from its early owner, Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes (born in 1625). Over the centuries the property passed through several owners and families who shaped its development. In 1855 the estate was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux classification. In the modern era the château changed ownership multiple times: it was purchased in 1952 by wine merchant and writer Alexis Lichine (the father of Sacha Lichine, later the founder of Château d’Esclans in Provence and the creator of the Whispering Angel rosé) together with a group of investors. Under Alexis Lichine, the production of Lascombes almost tripled before selling the estate. Later acquired by the Bass Charrington group in 1971, and in 2001 it was bought by the investment firm Colony Capital. Since 2022 the estate has been owned by the Lawrence family, marking a new stage in its development. One of the first moves made by the new owner was to bring in Axel Heinz, the long-time director of Ornellaia and Masseto to manage Lascombes.

The vineyard of Château Lascombes covers about 120 hectares in the Margaux appellation, with an additional 10 hectares in Haut-Médoc, making it one of the largest vineyard holdings among the classified growths of Margaux. The terroir includes a mosaic of soils such as gravel hilltops, clay-gravel and clay-limestone plots, which influence the choice of grape varieties. The vineyard is planted with approximately 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc also present.

Vinification

Vinification is carried out with a focus on parcel selection. Fermentation takes place in a combination of vats adapted to individual vineyard parcels, allowing each plot to be vinified separately before blending. The wines are typically aged for about 18–20 months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak depending on the vintage, before the final blend is assembled.

On the nose, this wine reveals expressive aromas of dark berries, blackberry, and plum, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, and gentle spice from matured oak. The palate is refined and balanced, delivering flavors of ripe dark fruit, earthy undertones, and subtle herbal complexity supported by smooth, well-integrated tannins and lingering acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and poised, leaving impressions of fruit, cedar, and savory nuance.

Best served slightly below room temperature and decanted before serving, Château Lascombes pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled steak, mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses. Its mature profile makes it ideal for refined dinners and special occasions.
