Château du Tertre Margaux 2011
400
“The estate’s vineyards are scattered with soils rich in history, whose varied character is conducive to quality viticulture”
“An estate that has eyes on it right now as it changes hands from the Albada to the Helfrich family. At this point winemaker Frederic Ardouin had been there for three years, and has made a wine with a supple quality to the tannins, and plenty of juice running through it. Very much ready to enjoy and will give a ton of pleasure. Easy to recommend. 10% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 30% new oak.” - Decanter 92

About The Winery
Château du Tertre takes its name from its elevated position, as “tertre” in French refers to a hill or rising ground on which the vineyards are planted. With origins dating back to 1143, it is among the oldest wine estates on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Formerly known as Tertre d’Arsac, the property passed through numerous owners over the centuries, including Pierre Mitchell, a Bordeaux glassblower in the 18th century credited with the creation of the Jeroboam bottle; during his tenure, part of the wine was likely estate-bottled, an uncommon practice at the time.
The estate enjoyed strong demand in the Dutch market, leading to its acquisition by Henri de Koenigswarter, who renamed it Château du Tertre. Ownership later passed to the Cruse family in the early 20th century. After a period of decline by World War II, the château was acquired in 1961 by Philippe Gasqueton, also owner of Château Calon Ségur, who replanted the vineyards, restored the château and modernised the winemaking facilities, laying the foundations for its modern revival. Following the death of Philippe Gasqueton in 1995, Château du Tertre was sold to Eric and Louise Albada Jelgersma, under whose ownership the estate began a significant revival led by Alexander van Beek, including the transition to hand harvesting and vineyard replanting. In January 2021, the property was acquired by the Helfrich family.
On the nose, Château du Tertre reveals delicate aromas of red currant, black cherry, and plum, layered with floral notes, cedar, tobacco, and gentle spice. The palate is smooth and balanced, offering flavors of ripe red berries, subtle earthy undertones, and soft oak influence supported by fine, well-integrated tannins. The finish is long, elegant, and graceful, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and floral character.
Best served at cellar temperature, this Margaux pairs beautifully with roasted meats, lamb dishes, mushroom-based recipes, and aged cheeses. Its finesse and maturity make it ideal for refined dinners and special occasions.
