Abou The Winery

Caymus Vineyards is located in Rutherford, a sub-AVA of Napa Valley, California. The winery was founded in 1972 by Chuck Wagner together with his parents, Charlie and Lorna Wagner, on family land where the Wagners had already been farming grapes for decades. Chuck Wagner was only 19 years old when the family decided to start a commercial winery. The Wagner family has roots in Napa Valley dating back to the 1850s, and the estate remains 100% family-owned and operated, with the next generation now working alongside Chuck Wagner in the vineyard and winery.

From the beginning, Caymus focused primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, which remains the core of the winery’s identity. The grapes come from vineyards on the Napa Valley floor as well as surrounding hillside sites, with low-fertility soils that help control vigor and concentrate the fruit. The estate works with careful vineyard management including high-density plantings, yield thinning and in some parcels dry farming, aiming to produce grapes with high ripeness and concentration. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates production, while smaller quantities of other varieties such as Zinfandel are produced in limited bottlings.

Vinification

In the cellar the winery focuses on producing rich, fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon, a style that is approachable even when young but also capable of long bottle ageing. Each year the best barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon are selected to create the flagship wine Caymus Special Selection, produced only from the finest lots. This wine has twice been named Wine Spectator’s “Wine of the Year” (for the 1984 and 1990 vintages), a rare distinction that helped establish Caymus as one of the most influential Cabernet producers in Napa Valley. 

On the nose, this Cabernet reveals intense aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, layered with notes of mocha, cedar, vanilla, and subtle spice from oak aging. The palate is lush and full-bodied, delivering flavors of rich dark fruit, chocolate, cassis, and hints of espresso, supported by smooth, polished tannins and bright acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and lingering, leaving lasting impressions of fruit, oak, and spice.
