About The Winery

The estate has been associated with fine sweet wine production since the 18th century, and its prominence was confirmed with inclusion in the official 1855 Classification. Over time Rieussec passed through several noble families before entering the portfolio of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), who acquired it in the late 20th century. Under this stewardship, the château has benefited from sustained investment in vineyards, cellars and winemaking facilities, reinforcing its reputation as one of Sauternes’ leading producers.

The vineyard covers approximately 85 hectares, making it one of the largest in Sauternes. Plantings consist of 85% Sémillon, 13% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle, on soils composed of gravel, sand, clay and limestone. The vineyards are located on sloping terrain and reach elevations of up to 78 m a.s.l., among the highest in the appellation, exceeded only by Château d’Yquem. Vines have an average age of around 25 years.

At Château Rieussec, vinification is conducted with parcel-based precision to capture the unique ripeness and botrytised characteristics of each section of the vineyard. Grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and oak casks before being matured in oak barriques (70% new) for 18-24 months.

Beginning with the 2022 vintage, the château introduced a new bottle design made from PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) glass, featuring a redesigned shape and an opaque finish highlighting the estate’s visual identity. The bottle now bears only the name “Rieussec”, without reference to Sauternes or Bordeaux, underlining the estate’s standalone identity.

On the nose, Carmes de Rieussec reveals luxurious aromas of apricot, peach, honey, and candied citrus peel, layered with floral notes and hints of vanilla. The palate is silky and indulgent, offering flavors of ripe stone fruits, marmalade, honey, and subtle spice, balanced by refreshing acidity that prevents it from feeling overly sweet. The finish is long, smooth, and beautifully lingering, with notes of fruit and honeyed richness.
