About The Winery

Caiarossa is a wine estate located in Riparbella, in the Upper Maremma on the Tuscan coast, an area known for its proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea and its complex geological formations. The estate was founded in 1998 with the ambition of creating a vineyard-driven project capable of expressing the unique character of this coastal Tuscan terroir. In 2004, Caiarossa was acquired by Eric Albada Jelgersma, owner of Château Giscours in Margaux, bringing long-term vision, investment and technical refinement to the project.

The vineyards of Caiarossa are situated at elevations ranging from approximately 90 to 400 metres above sea level, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate tempered by maritime influence, constant breezes and significant day–night temperature variation. This combination contributes to freshness, balance and aromatic definition in the wines. The soils are highly complex and heterogeneous, composed of limestone, clay, sand and iron-rich stones, giving the wines structure and mineral tension. The estate covers around 31 hectares of vineyards, all cultivated according to certified biodynamic practices, reflecting a deep commitment to biodiversity, soil vitality and natural balance.

Vinification

In the cellar, Caiarossa follows a low-intervention, terroir-focused approach. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, with each variety and parcel vinified separately. Aging is carried out primarily in oak barrels, with careful selection of formats and toast levels to support structure and complexity without dominating the wine. The final blend is assembled only after extended evaluation of each component, prioritising balance, precision and ageing potential over power.

On the nose, Caiarossa 2018 reveals intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, layered with notes of violet, cocoa, tobacco, and subtle spice. The palate is rich and full-bodied, offering flavors of dark berries, chocolate, and gentle earthy undertones supported by well-integrated tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, smooth, and sophisticated, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, oak, and spice.
