Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2002: A Mature Burgundy White of Mineral Precision and Honeyed Elegance

Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2002 is an exceptional white Burgundy that captures the depth and distinction of one of France's most prestigious Chardonnay appellations. Located on the western slopes of the renowned Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune, the estate's vineyards span a remarkable variety of limestone, marl, clay and silt soils. These differences in terroir contribute to the wine's combination of mineral tension, aromatic complexity and rich texture. Produced from Chardonnay, the 2002 vintage reflects a celebrated Burgundy growing season, when favourable late-summer conditions helped deliver grapes with impressive concentration and aromatic potential. Fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels contribute subtle richness while allowing the vineyard's distinctive character to remain at the forefront.

Now more than two decades old, this Grand Cru displays the potential for remarkable evolution in the bottle. Depending on its storage history, the colour may range from golden yellow to deeper amber hues. The bouquet can reveal ripe lemon, baked apple, white peach and pear, accompanied by acacia honey, toasted hazelnuts, butter, vanilla and delicate floral notes. Beneath the mature fruit, the palate retains a mineral backbone, refreshing acidity and a creamy yet finely defined texture. Hints of white pepper and wet stone add further complexity, leading to a long finish with citrus, dried fruit and subtle honeyed nuances.

The appeal of the 2002 vintage lies in its ability to combine maturity with freshness and structure. Contemporary tasting assessments have highlighted its ripe apple and peach flavours, layered minerality and expansive finish, while other notes describe a silky texture and impressive intensity. Corton-Charlemagne is renowned for producing Chardonnay that balances power with precision, and Bonneau du Martray's varied vineyard parcels contribute to this distinctive style. At this age, individual bottles can differ considerably, making careful provenance and storage particularly important. For collectors of fine white Burgundy, this vintage offers an opportunity to experience the transition from youthful citrus and stone fruit towards the richer, savoury complexity that develops with bottle age.

Serve at approximately 12-14°C to reveal the wine's mature aromas without diminishing its freshness. Open the bottle carefully and taste it before deciding whether to allow additional time in the glass, as older white Burgundy can be sensitive to prolonged aeration. Pair it with roasted lobster, scallops, grilled turbot, buttery crab or pan-seared sea bass. Roast chicken with cream sauce, mushroom dishes and aged Comté also complement its richness and mineral character. For an elegant dinner, a simply prepared seafood dish with lemon, herbs and a light butter sauce will allow the wine's layered flavours to shine.
