“The vineyards are at the southern end of the appellation, mostly above the road. They offer quite a different style to the northern vineyards of the Denis Mortet label. One third whole bunch, 25% new wood. Clear, bright purple, the wood makes an impression to begin with then floral rose and peony notes emerge along with deep red fruit. Not too deep but with finesse. From 7 lieu dits: Les Epointures (1 ha), La Justice (0.35 ha), Champs-Chenys (0.20 ha), Les Champerriers (0.20 ha), En Jouise (0.20 ha), Clos de l’Arche (0.20 ha), Les Platières (0.20 ha). 40+ year old vines.

Fermentation with indigenous yeast. Aged 16 months in barrel (1/3rd new). Unfined and unfiltered.

About The Winery

Arnaud inherited the estate from his famous father when he was 24, but he had already learned a great deal from him. When he was young, he preferred skipping classes at school, making learning about the land the best of training courses. The winegrower’s profession is truly in the reality of the vineyard. After graduating, Arnaud went to work in Australia and in the United States. In 2000 he returned and worked in the vineyards with his father from 1999 to 2006, naturally following his path and learning everything from him. When he found himself alone for the 2006 vintage, he coped by saying: “I’m going to do as he did, but by also trusting my imagination.” He wants only one thing — that the estate may continue to exist.

Once in charge, the reputation for elite farming that the Mortet name was known for was taken to an even higher level. Arnaud deftly evolved the style of the wines, significantly reducing new wood, introducing whole cluster fermentations for certain wines, lessening the level of extraction, and fine-tuning his vinification to a point where the wines are now more elegant than in the past. Even so, he is never satisfied and continues to improve his work in the vineyards and the cellar.

In 2016, Arnaud Mortet launched his own label. Officially, it has to be classed as a négociant business, but in practice it functions very much like a Domaine, since Arnaud and his team carry out all the vineyard work. The vineyards have had no herbicide for at least 10 years. The Domaine covers approximately 2 hectares of Gevrey-Chambertin: a little bit of Lavaux-Saint-Jacques, rather more of La Perrière, and some Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin.
